Creating an XML sitemap for your WordPress website is easy to do and may help with your search engine. At the very least, it will help search engines better understand your site and how to categorize it in the rankings. WordPress XML is easily digestible for search robots.
Add Sitemap Functionality to WordPress
One of the easiest ways to generate an XML sitemap for WordPress is to use a plugin There are many different plugins from which to choose but for the purposes of this article, we’ll use the XML Sitemaps plugin to create a basic HTML sitemap.
- Log into your WordPress dashboard
- Click Plugins
- Click Add New
- Use the search field at the top right to search for “XML Sitemaps”
- Install and activate the plugin
The first step is complete. Now, you just need to submit your sitemap to search engines.
Submit Your Sitemap to Search Engines
The XML Sitemaps plugin makes it easy to submit your XML file to search engines. Once you’ve installed the plugin you will be redirected to a splash page. Toward the top, you’ll see a line that reads “Notify Search Engines about your sitemap…” Click the “your sitemap link” and your sitemap will ping the search engines. You’ll see a message at the top of the page to confirm the ping went through: “Ping was executed, please see below for the result.”
If you were not redirected to the plugin splash page you can always access it in the settings. From your WordPress Dashboard, just click XML-Sitemap under Settings.
